Start with the gaps: seal the door with a sweep and weatherstripping, fit heavy curtains over windows, and add soft mass such as rugs, bookcases and upholstered furniture. Gaps are the cheapest and largest single win in most rooms, because sound leaks through air paths long before it passes through the wall itself.
A standard interior wall is around STC 33, which means normal speech is understandable through it. STC 45 to 50 keeps loud speech to a murmur and is the practical target for bedrooms and home offices. STC 60 and above is home-theatre territory and usually needs decoupled framing.
No. Active noise cancellation is strongest on constant low-frequency sound such as engines, fans and air conditioning. Sudden or high-frequency sound like voices, keyboards and dog barks is mostly handled by the physical seal of the earcup rather than the electronics, so fit matters as much as the ANC itself.
They are worth it when the noise is constant and cannot be removed. Masking, smart speakers and adaptive audio make a space usable. They are not a substitute for treatment when the noise is structural, such as impact noise from a floor above, where decoupling is the only real fix.
