How to Reset JBL Headphones

Try these before resetting
Charge for 30 minutes. A deeply discharged battery will not respond to a button press at all and may show no charging light for several minutes. This accounts for most JBL headphones that appear dead.
Power cycle. Off, wait ten seconds, on.
For earbuds, reseat them. Both buds in the case, lid closed for ten seconds, reopen. That re establishes the link between the two buds and fixes one silent bud more often than a reset does.
Clean the charging contacts. The metal contacts on the buds and inside the case collect skin oils and pocket debris, which prevents charging while everything looks normal. A dry cotton bud clears them.
Forget the headphones on your phone and pair again, since a stale pairing on the phone side produces the same symptoms as a fault in the headphones.
Resetting over-ear and on-ear models
With the headphones powered on, hold the volume up and play or pause buttons together for around five seconds. The headphones power off, and on powering them back on they will be in pairing mode with an empty device list.
Some models use a different combination, commonly volume up plus volume down, or a longer hold of the power button. If the standard combination does nothing, check the card that came in the box for your specific model, since JBL varies this between ranges more than it should.
Where the buttons do nothing at all, connect the headphones to a charger for a few seconds first, which wakes a unit that has locked up.
Resetting earbuds
Put both buds in the charging case and confirm they are seated on the contacts, which the charging lights confirm.
With the lid open, hold the button on the case for ten to fifteen seconds until the light flashes, usually white or a color change depending on the model.
On models without a case button, hold the touch surface on both buds simultaneously for around fifteen seconds.
Close the lid, wait ten seconds, then reopen. The buds should be in pairing mode with the light flashing.
If only one bud responds, that bud is probably not charging. Clean its contacts and the corresponding well in the case, then try again.
The step that makes it work
After the reset, go to Bluetooth settings on every device that has ever paired with the headphones and remove them from the list.
A reset makes the headphones discard their stored pairing credentials. Any device still holding the old pairing keeps trying to reconnect using credentials that no longer exist, which fails silently and looks exactly like a reset that did nothing.
Do this on your phone, your tablet, your laptop and anything else. Then pair one device at a time, with Bluetooth switched off on the others.

After the reset
Pair the device you use most first, since some headphones prioritise the earliest pairing when several are available.
Open the JBL Headphones app and check for a firmware update, since connection reliability improves in updates and a reset does not apply them. Note that JBL uses separate apps for headphones and portable speakers, and having both installed causes confusion about which device appears where.
Re enable multipoint if you use it, since it is off by default on several models and a reset returns it to that state.
Expect to reconfigure the equalizer and any customised controls, since those settings live in the headphones rather than in the app.
What a reset will not fix
No power after 30 minutes on charge, on more than one cable and adapter, which points to a battery or charging circuit failure.
