How to Soundproof a Bathroom Door

Seal four gaps for USD 60 to 120 and keep the ventilation working. Here is why a drop seal beats a fixed sweep, and when to replace the slab.

Soundproofing a bathroom door comes down to sealing four gaps and keeping the ventilation working. Fit an automatic drop seal rather than a fixed sweep, weatherstrip the head and both jambs, and caulk the framing gap behind the casing. That costs USD 60 to 120 and closes the largest opening in the room. Replacing the slab comes after, not before.

Bathrooms have one constraint no other room has: the gap under the door is usually there deliberately, to let air in so the extractor fan can work. Any fix that ignores that leaves you with a sealed door, a struggling fan and damp on the ceiling.

Why the door leaks more than the wall

A hollow core interior door rates around STC 20 to 25. The wall it sits in, even a plain 2×4 stud wall with a single layer of drywall each side, is around STC 33. The door is already the weak point before you count anything else.

Then the gaps make it dramatically worse. An opening of less than one percent of an assembly’s area can cost close to 30 STC points, and a typical three quarter inch undercut caps the whole doorway near 20 dB of blocking whatever the slab is made of.

The practical consequence is that sealing beats replacing, every time and by a wide margin. A sealed hollow core door outperforms an unsealed solid core one.

The bottom gap and the ventilation problem

An automatic drop seal is the right product for a bathroom specifically. A spring loaded seal housed in the bottom edge of the door drops when the door closes and lifts clear when it opens, so the gap is closed while you are in there and open the rest of the time.

Expect USD 30 to 60 for a surface mounted unit that screws to the face of the door, or more for a mortised one that sits inside the slab. Surface mounted is the DIY choice and looks acceptable painted to match.

A fixed brush sweep or a heavy silicone sweep at USD 15 to 45 is the cheaper option, and it seals permanently. If your bathroom has a window that opens, or an extractor with a dedicated air path, that is fine. If the only source of make up air is under the door, do not use one.

The alternative is a transfer grille fitted high in the wall or the door, which lets air pass while breaking the direct line of sight for sound. An acoustic transfer grille costs USD 60 to 150 and gives you ventilation with far less leakage than an open undercut. This is what a properly designed bathroom uses.

The perimeter

Adhesive backed silicone or rubber weatherstripping in the door stop rebate, around the head and both jambs. Compress it enough that the door needs a small push to latch, since a seal the door does not touch is decorative. USD 20 to 35 for a kit.

Silicone survives bathroom humidity better than foam tape, which compresses permanently and goes moldy. Do not use foam here.

Check the latch afterward. Adding a compressed seal can stop the door latching cleanly, and the fix is usually moving the strike plate a couple of millimeters rather than reducing the seal.

The gap behind the casing

This is the one nobody looks at. Pull one piece of door casing off and you will usually find a half inch gap between the door frame and the rough framing, containing bare fluffy insulation or nothing at all.

That gap is a direct air path around your newly sealed door. Fill it with acoustic caulk rather than expanding foam, at USD 12 to 20 a tube, then refit the casing and caulk where the casing meets the wall.

Expanding foam is the wrong material here. It is rigid when cured, so it bridges the frame to the framing and gives vibration a path across, and it has almost no mass.

Upgrading the slab

Only after the four gaps are sealed. A solid core door rates STC 27 to 35 and costs USD 120 to 300 for the slab before hanging.

Budget for three hinges rather than two and longer screws into the framing, because a solid slab is heavy enough to sag a two hinge frame within a year.

Check the swing clearance before ordering. Solid core slabs are thicker than hollow core ones on some ranges, and a thicker door in an existing frame can foul the stop.

If replacing is not an option, adding mass to the existing door works to a point. A layer of mass loaded vinyl sandwiched behind a thin plywood or hardboard skin, glued and screwed to the room side of the slab, adds real weight. It looks like what it is, and it is heavy enough to need the hinge upgrade anyway.

What not to bother with

A thin soundproof blanket hung over the door is only worth what its weight buys, which on a typical blanket is a decibel or two. A genuinely heavy moving blanket does slightly more and looks like a moving blanket.
