Here you can use anything, and the useful question is what kind of noise you are fighting.

Active cancellation works below roughly 1 kHz and is excellent against constant low frequency noise. Traffic, air conditioning, a train, building plant, a distant motorway.

It does very little against speech, because the intelligible part of a voice sits above where cancellation can operate. The timing budget runs out: the system has to compute and play the inverse waveform before the sound arrives, and short wavelengths make that impossible.

Blocking voices requires a physical seal. That means well fitted earbuds, ideally with foam tips, or over-ear headphones with a good pad seal.

What to look for in a study pair

Comfort over many hours outranks everything else. You will wear these for far longer sessions than most headphone buyers, and clamping force that is fine for an hour becomes painful at hour four.

Weight matters past about 250 grams for over-ear models, particularly if the headband concentrates pressure on one spot.

Whatever you choose, use the same thing on practice tests that you plan to use on test day, which is nothing. Training your concentration in conditions you cannot reproduce in the exam works against you.

Protecting your hearing through a long preparation

MCAT preparation runs for months at many hours a day, which is an unusual exposure pattern.
