Noise Reducing Ideas for Bathrooms That Work
The door leaks more than the wall and pipes are a separate problem. Here is what to seal, how to isolate pipework, and which extractor fans stay quiet.
Bathroom noise splits into two problems: sound escaping through the door, and pipe noise traveling through the structure. The door is the bigger leak and the cheaper fix, with a sweep and perimeter seals costing USD 50 to 100. Pipe noise needs the pipes wrapped or isolated, and no amount of work on the walls will touch it.
Bathrooms are also the worst rooms acoustically in most homes, because tile, glass and porcelain reflect almost everything. That is why voices carry so clearly out of them, and why a bathroom sounds harsh even before you consider what the neighbors can hear.
The door does most of the leaking
A hollow core bathroom door rates around STC 20 to 25, against roughly STC 33 for the wall it sits in. Add the gap underneath, often three quarters of an inch and deliberately left for ventilation, and the whole doorway is capped near 20 dB of blocking regardless of the slab.
Seal the perimeter with adhesive backed silicone weatherstripping in the door stop, compressed enough that the door needs a small push to latch. USD 20 to 35 for a kit.
The bottom gap is the awkward one, because bathrooms need airflow to clear moisture. An automatic drop seal is the right answer here: it seals when the door closes and lifts clear when it opens, so ventilation still works while the door is open. USD 30 to 60, and worth the extra over a fixed sweep in this room specifically.
Then pull one piece of door casing off and fill the gap between the frame and the framing with acoustic caulk rather than expanding foam. USD 12 to 20 a tube and it closes a path most people never look at.
A solid core door slab at USD 120 to 300 is the next step, and only worth it after the gaps are sealed.
Pipe noise, which is a different problem entirely
The rushing and knocking you hear through walls and ceilings is structure borne. Water moving through a pipe vibrates it, the pipe is clipped to a joist or stud, and the whole timber frame radiates the sound into rooms nowhere near the bathroom.
Wrapping the pipe in mass loaded vinyl or a purpose made pipe lagging works, but only if you also break the contact between pipe and structure. Rubber lined pipe clips or a wrap of neoprene where each clip grips the pipe is what stops the vibration reaching the timber, and it matters more than the wrap itself.
Waste pipes are the loudest, since water falls freely down them. Cast iron soil stacks are dramatically quieter than plastic ones, which is why older houses often sound better in this respect. Wrapping a plastic soil stack in mass loaded vinyl inside the boxing is one of the more satisfying improvements available, and it costs USD 60 to 150 in material.
Water hammer, the bang when a tap or a washing machine valve shuts, is a pressure problem rather than an acoustic one. An arrestor fitted near the offending valve at USD 15 to 40 is the correct fix.
Extractor fans
Fan noise is worth measuring rather than guessing at. Fans are rated in sones, and the difference between a 4 sone builder grade unit and a 0.3 sone quality one is the difference between a fan you avoid using and one you forget is on.
Most of the racket in a cheap installation is not the motor. It is the duct: flexible plastic ducting crushed into a tight bend produces turbulence noise far louder than the fan itself. Use rigid duct with gentle bends where you can, keep the run short, and make sure the exterior vent flap is not rattling.
An inline fan, mounted in the loft several feet away from the ceiling grille, is the quietest arrangement, because the motor noise is no longer in the room at all.
Echo inside the room
This is absorption rather than blocking, and it is the reason voices sound so loud in a bathroom. Hard tile, glass and porcelain reflect nearly all the energy that hits them, so reverberation time is long and every sound stacks on top of its own reflections.
Soft material fixes it and there is not much room for it. Thick towels on a rail, a fabric shower curtain rather than a glass screen, a bath mat, and a fabric blind instead of a hard one will all take the edge off. The shared wall
If the bathroom backs onto a bedroom, the wall itself is worth attention, but only after the door and the pipes.
Electrical outlets and light switches on a shared wall are usually back to back with the ones next door, with nothing between them but a plastic box. Acoustic putty pads at USD 3 to 6 each close one of the most common flanking paths in a house.
Adding a second layer of drywall with a damping compound between the layers buys 5 to 9 STC points for USD 2 to 4 per square foot in materials, which is enough to turn intelligible speech into a murmur.
